On Thursday, April 20th, 2017, ASPIRA of New York will celebrate its 2017 annual Circle of Latino Achievers gala at Espace, 635 W. 42nd St., New York, New York, 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.We hope you will join us for an inspiring evening that will focus on recognizing corporate achievers, stellar public servants and outstanding educators who make a difference, as well as awarding our Latino youth with college scholarships.
Since 1961, ASPIRA has been at the forefront of providing educational and leadership development opportunities to Latino youth. ASPIRA, which means “to aspire,” was founded by Dr. Antonia Pantoja in New York City and has grown from a local organization to the nation’s largest Latino nonprofit. To this end, over half a million young Latinos and Latinas have benefited from ASPIRA’s youth development, college access and mentoring programs. In New York City, nearly all of the students we serve come from low-income households. More often than not, they attend poor performing schools in under-resourced school districts.
In 2016, 100% of students engaged in our College Access Leadership Program earned a high school diploma; of those, 93% entered college. We cultivated 9 new school based programs, to a total of 40, up from 31, representing a 29% increase. In every program we run, active students showed a marked improvement in all school subjects, including reading, writing and math. The majority of students reported increased confidence levels and greater college “awareness.” Moreover, our service model encouraged community empowerment through active engagement, as well as, the engendering of contributions to the wider society. Aspirantes become leaders -- and we also reach out to leaders, such as yourself, to become mentors to the young people we serve, but, despite these initiatives, more still needs to be done.
This year’s Aspirante of the Year Award which recognizes those who courageously and positively impact our community through innovative advocacy efforts will be presented to Eric Gonzalez, Acting District Attorney for Kings County of New York, for his commitment to improving the lives of all New Yorkers, particularly our youth.
The future of all business – and our nation– rests on their success...and your support. Thank you.
This year marks ASPIRA of New York’s 56TH Anniversary. The occasion promises to be an inspiring night focused on recognizing corporate achievers, as well as honorees who have made a difference in the Latino community.
